Lazy Susan– YOU’RE FIRED!

Lazy Susan?  More like Inefficient Susan, at least when it comes to corner cabinet storage!

Don’t get me wrong.  A good ole lazy Susan has its place. Like on a dining table in a Chinese restaurant.

Or on your dining table! A client had a lazy Susan made for her dining table because she entertains a lot, and for family style dinner parties, it’s BRILLIANT!  No, THAT kind of lazy Susan is fine.  Today, it’s the corner cabinet lazy Susan I want to address.

LOST IN SPACE! The inefficiency of it all!

They say you can’t fit a round peg in a square hole!

But you CAN fit a round shelf in a square cabinet. You just have to make it a whole lot smaller which means you lose an incredible amount of storage space and efficiency!

I remember the old wobbly metal lazy Susan in my parents’ home.  Things just flew off when you spun it and I am fairly certain there are beef bouillon cubes lodged in the back of that cabinet to this very day!

I thought the corner cabinet had really evolved when the “half moon” lazy Susan was created. It pulls out and gives great access but still lacks efficiency.

What’s new in blind corner cabinet storage.

“If you knew Susie, like I know Susie…”

“Susie” has come a long way!! Nowadays you really have some great options for blind corner cabinets and storage.  The corner cabinet pull out system I recommend these days is one of THE most efficient I’ve found.

This fabulous design is called a “Pull-Side-Pull” blind corner accessory from Rev-A-Shelf. I LOVE this design.  It gives you so many options, it stores so much more efficiently and it glides in and out effortlessly.  A total 👍🏻 from me!

ShelfGenie Glide-Outs

ShelfGenie has also created some very useful corner cabinet guide-outs which make a truly great use of dead corner space. First, pull the front facing glide out, then pull the glide from the back forward to access those items. The height of the shelf/pull-out is adjustable when it is installed, so be clear about what you want to store in that area to make the most efficient use of the space.

When “lazy” is a good thing!

Ok, I have to admit, I am not at all against using a lazy Susan in an UPPER corner cabinet, because they are great for oils, vinegars and spices when they are located in close proximity to the stove.  There are a few new options in the upper cabinet lazy Susan department like a kidney shape (see below) that makes efficient use of the door access space. And I like this idea from Rylex – a combination lazy Susan with an upper shelf, which is much more efficient.

Here are a few suggestions to keep in mind when trying to utilize corner cabinet storage:

  • What do I want to store in these cabinets? OrgoDomo TIP: Think categories! This may be a great area for all your small appliances. Or maybe mixing and measuring.
  • What are the dimensions of the items I would like to store here? OrgoDomo TIP: Use this info to adjust the heights of shelves.
  • How often do I need to access these items? OrgoDomo TIP: less used items to the back!

As I always say, ADJUSTABILITY IS KEY. One thing people may not be aware of is the shelf height of the lazy Susan is usually ADJUSTABLE!!? So maybe Ole lazy Susan is finally getting her act together.  She’s more utilitarian now then ever.  Way to go SUSIE!

Stay calm, cool and connected.
